Kale & collards
The greens that laugh at October. Often still pickable after Christmas against a south wall.
Fresh vitamins when the garden is otherwise sticks.
- Sow
- March 15 and again July 20. Very hardy.
- Spacing
- 16–18 in. They get big.
- Days
- Cut-and-come-again from day 40
- Harvest
- Pick lower leaves. A freeze sweetens them. Don’t strip the growing tip.
- Store
- In the garden under a sheet or low tunnel is the best ‘storage’. Or blanch and dry.
- Seed
- Biennial. Overwinter and isolate from cabbage/broccoli.
- Companions
- Beets, onion, herbs.
- Pests
- Same cabbage worms. Aphids in hot spells — soap spray or a hard hose blast.
Winterbor and Siberian types out-winter here with almost no help.
