Turnip & rutabaga
Sown in late July, pulled after frost, buried in sand. Peasant food that works.
They grow in our short fall and don’t care about clay.
- Sow
- July 20–August 10. Keep wet until up.
- Spacing
- 4 in turnip, 8 in rutabaga.
- Days
- 50 turnip / 90 rutabaga
- Harvest
- After several frosts. Greens are food too.
- Store
- Sand in the cellar, or in the ground under a heavy leaf mulch.
- Seed
- Biennial. Same caveats as other brassicas.
- Companions
- Peas (spring), onion.
- Pests
- Flea beetles on seedlings — row cover.
Purple Top White Globe and American Purple Top rutabaga are the old reliable.
